ENERGY EFFICIENCY
ENERGY EFFICIENCY
Will using Energy Efficient gadgets reduce your Electricity Bill ?
The government is going all out to
push energy efficient electrical appliances, and is serious about it. All of us
wished to use these LED bulbs but were slow about it, due to their high cost.
During the past year (2015-2016) it has sold directly to consumers excellent LED bulbs at less than market prices. It is now doing the same with ceiling fans, which every household uses in good numbers. The fans offered are of 5 star rating.
Those of us who have gotten these
bulbs are glad they did so. This has started reducing our electricity bills to
an extent which is visible to us and the public is happy. But it shall be affecting
the Electricity Organisations of every State (going under different names in
each state) in at least two ways …
(1). Demand for electricity shall
gradually reduce, with the use of such energy efficient gadgets. But the
population is increasing; living standard of the public is going up. People
using only fans start using air-coolers. Those using coolers install an AC.
Those having an AC get two more for the other rooms. People buy a bigger
refrigerator; buy newer electrical gadgets and so on. So the reduction in
demand by using energy efficient gadgets shall take care of the increase in
demand by increased living standards only for a few months or a couple of years
. This means that by pushing energy efficient gadgets, the government is only gaining
time towards an increase in the
production of electricity by the generating plants. The capacity increase of
power plants across India
shall get a respite of an year or so by this exercise. Of course the respite
shall only be for a few years, because electrical consumption shall gradually
outstrip the saving, and ultimately we shall have to increase electrical
production.
(2) When our electricity bills start
going down – it results in the Electricity Organisation getting a DECREASED
income. This is not welcome by the organisation, as it has to pay annual
increments to its employees, pay out increased salary every couple of years due
to wage revision (either taken by striking employees, or sanctioned by a wage
commission). The Electrical Organisation does not want to get the same income,
but wants to get its income increased every year to take care of its salary and
other bills.
So you see, your electricity bill may
reduce for a few months, but as soon as the financial year ends and the
electrical organisation see the reduced income, it shall increase the rates.
And you are going to pay the same amount you were paying before the bills came
down.
One consolation may be that although
you may be paying the same amount as earlier (through using energy efficient
things) you may console yourself that you are now getting to keep two or three more
bulbs switched on more than you used to do earlier.
Some small consolation indeed !!!
sir, i think you ignored that the govt is increasing production and the rate at which discoms are buying electricity has reduced too!
