FAN REGULATOR

             Requirement of air flow changes with seasons; more being required in peak summer, less required in milder or rainy weather. Regulators which are used for adjusting the speed of ceiling fans, used to be provided free with the fans in the good old days, but you have to pay extra for them now. These regulators in the good old days were solidly built and are still working in old houses, bungalows etc.

The smaller electronic ones are in trend nowadays. They are fitted in line with the switches on the board, and mostly behave erratically. With time the manufacturers have used ‘new technology, cost reduction, etc’ in these regulators, and therein lies the problem. Mostly they run the fan at either full or some lesser speed, no matter which setting you switch them to.

The older resistance variety regulators are still available, though would they work better is your luck. With cost reduction at manufacturers end, their working is a chance – they may work nicely or not.

         Fan running at 100% speed with regulator pointing at 5, and then at 50% when moved to 4 is the worst thing that can happen to you when you are trying to have a restful sleep.

Posting your laments on social media is the done thing nowadays, so I went ahead and found that this is a pretty common problem. The deluge of outpouring from frustrated gentry is enormous. I have collected soulful outpourings, and it seems everyone is affected, suffering silently. The collection was very large, and naturally all cannot be reproduced.

(Disclaimer : The collection is from public platform, so the contents are varied. They are not mine. No offence to anyone is intended. Take them in a lighter vein as they are intended. My apologies in advance to all if any one feels offended)

So here goes ….

* Worst is when it runs at 20% at 4.

* Mine doesn’t work from point 1 to 4, only at 5 full speed.

* I have a fan whose blades can be counted at at 1 and 2. At 3 it’s a helicopter.

* I thought I was the only one experiencing that. My fan runs at 100 % at regulator pointing to 5 and 20% at regulator pointing to 4.

* Start a petition to change the regulator.

* Supreme Court should take suo-moto action and send a notice to Modi asking him for an explanation. Response to be submitted in sealed cover.

* 5 par hi chala kar , uske blades par bricks taang do, adjust the number of bricks as per speed needed.

* 1 blade nikal sakte hai, easy option.

* Now imagine hearing this, which an electrician told me years ago  – “ In summer you need fan full speed, and in winter you don’t need fan. So why repair the regulator which is off or full.”

* Mine goes full speed at all points1 to 5, so frustrating.

* I feel Twitter fans won’t be able to make your fans work well. You need a good electrician.

* I have eliminated this problem by using two regulators in series. You can get 16 speeds now. In summer 4-4, rainy 3-3, winter 4-1. Good quality regulators are of .................... At office also wall fans have 1 regulator and other with switch. Good combo with AC.

* Electronic regulators are the culprits. At many places I have put the old resistance type regulators.

* Same here. Looks like this is a universal problem. SC should take up this matter and first of all regulators of Delhi must be upgraded. Next Gujarat.

* Out here, nos 0 & 1 have no difference. 2&3 have no difference. When enquired for good quality fan, shopkeeper says all brands are Chinese make.

* Its every middle class drama.

* Use ceiling fan with Alexa feature.

* Modi must rezine if they cannot even regulate your fans.

* At Harvard they had a case study before degree could be awarded .. “As to why Modi gov is setting the default temp at 26 deg C for Ac’s”

* Simple reason is fan speed is not proportional to voltage. Regulator is a voltage varying tool. Load torque (against which you rotate) is a function of speed squared. This is open loop controller. With feedback controller, perfect speed control is possible. Are we prepared to pay for it ?

* Have seen some fans run only at 5. If you change the number, it stops working and start singing.

* This socialist society is just obsessed with regulators. Be a capitalist so that you can afford an AC.

* Change the Chinese regulator!! Why not start a petition campaign against Chinese maal.

* The worst part is, electricity consumed is same in both the cases. Now that’s what I call the worst thing which happens to a human being.

* Get a BLDC fan. Remote wala. Feels like the next best thing after sliced bread or whatever is the Indian variant.

* What is the default regulator setting as per govt ?

* And I thought I’m the only one facing this issue. But I was wrong. Let’s start a trend now.

* At least it has a functioning regulator, unlike many organizations.

* Exactly. I have the same problem. Ideally speed thoda kam hona chahiye, par yaha eisa lagta hai ki IV drip glucose ka chadana padega.

* Because its steps are designed by poorly paid engineers. Industry not wanting to pay good salary.

* That is how fan regulators work. Been wondering is it just my fan or overall. My doubts now cleared.

* Modi should rejine.

* Step regulator ki jagah dimmer use kar sakte ho.

* Sonu Sood ko bolo, regulator change karwa dega.

* 4 number par to pankha heater ho jata hai.

* It’s an issue of national concern. Suo Moto cognizance should be taken at highest level.

* 5 par rakh kar chaddar odh lo.

* You have 1 to 5 levels all working. I thought India has only 2 levels 1 no and full speed.

* Seriously. And also a mystery of science that only Dr Udit Raj or his super genius boss can solve.

* I have this same problem in adjusting the volume while listening to music in earphones.

* In Bangalore you can keep the fan at either 1 or 2 setting most of the time in summer. Bangalore is a truly air-conditioned city.

* This is a drawback with the modern TRIAC speed controllers which was not there in resistance control regulators. But Resistance control regulators consume more electricity.

* This is a conspiracy by Kejriwal to give more electricity bill and messing with regulators. We need an enquiry.

* These new age modular fan regulators are shit compared to old mechanical ones. Maybe pitch in with expert opinion.

* 1 se 4 tak ek hi speed me chalta hai, aur 5 par ekdam toofan la deta hai.

* Thoda kharcha kar ke electrician ko bula lo ya uske liye bhi twitter pe us ke liye donation lenge ?

* You must start rotating yourself to bring the relative speed to 75%. This is the only solution, save the money and don’t change the fan regulator.

* Go Green.

* Roushan’s Law – No fan can spin at optimum speed. It is always faster or slower than your need.

* Don’t quite agree – Mom coming to room and switch off the fan is the worst thing that can happen to a human being.

* Some people work as 5 on one assignment, as 4 at another and 1 on the rest – yahi kahna tha na ?

* I thought I was the only one in the world suffering this. Are there more ?

* Mera to har jagah barabar ek hi speed me chalta hai. Chahe 2 ho ya 5.

* This is routine for all new fans. Need to solve.

* Even worse is having to use fan in July – during monsoons.

* Same case here – it is really difficult to understand why it is so.

* Just change your fan’s capacitor once in 6 months.

* Send your UPI.

* It’s not linear scaling. Always a lograthmic scaling.

* Story of all fans at home.

* Regulator ki sohbat apke saath badal gayi.

* 2 par to band hi ho jata hai.

* Damn, this feels so relatable.

* Non liniearity.

* PIL in SC soon.

* Room change kar lo.

* Change the regulator.

* People don’t learn seriously in school. If they did they would have known earlier.

* Change it to B& W TV regulator or Radio tuner regulator. They work fine.

* Sloppy engineering. Name and shame the company.

* Don’t we have a regulatory body for regulators ?

* So damn irritating.

* That’s almost the case with each and every fan.

* This comment takes the cake ….  “This is so categorically middle class.”
